Who or what is Signpost?

Signpost is an award-winning Scottish charity which offers support and information to children with additional support needs, and their families, to enable them to have the best life possible and meet their full potential. We help over 400 families each year, supporting children with and without a diagnosis to overcome the challenges of childhood disability.

We are registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR.org.uk) reg. no SC032398.

Your participation in this run will support our valuable work, with at least 85% of the entry fee supporting our work with families.

What is a virtual run, and who can do it?

Instead of everyone running together, a 'virtual run' is run in your own time, at your own pace, in a place that you choose. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities - young, old, couch potatoes and experienced runners! We hope that young people, non-runners, and those with additional needs, will be encouraged to 'have a go' at one of the shorter distances, while experienced runners can challenge themselves with a longer distance. Every entrant will receive our unique medal.

How do I do the Star Challenge?

Simply walk, run, cycle or wheel 2km, 5km, 10km, or even a whole half-marathon (13 miles), send us proof that you have completed the distance, and receive our unique medal in return.

You don’t have to do the distance all in one go, as long as you complete it before 31st July 2018.  Just keep a note/take pictures of the distances covered until you have completed the challenge. It’s up to you whether to make it difficult or easy, and we hope that lots of families will ‘give it a go’ as a way of having fun together. Or why not get together with friends and have fun ?

Proof of completion

There are lots of ways to prove to us that you have completed the Challenge. If you have a fitness tracker such as a Fitbit, Garmin or Apple tracker, just take a picture of the read-out(s) showing the distance covered, and mail them to us at [email protected].

There are also lots of free apps for your mobile phone that can track distance, such as StravaRunkeeper and MapMyRun.You might also want to register for Parkrun, who will automatically send you an email showing your time for completing 5km. Our local Parkrun is a free event which takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am, starting from Livingston Civic Centre (park at the football stadium) and following the river paths nearby.  Sign up at least 24 hours before an event, and don’t forget to bring your barcode!

Parent/carers can simply send us an email to confirm that their child has completed the Challenge.

What if I can't complete the challenge on time?

Life happens - we get it! Just drop Signpost an email and we'll make alternative arrangements - we don't want anyone to miss out on their medal. Contact [email protected]

Is there a cost?

Entries to the Star Challenge cost £12 for adults, and £7 for children (under 16 at time of entry), plus a booking fee, with at least 85% of fees being donated to Signpost to support its work with families of young people with additional support needs.

I'm not in the UK - can I still enter?

Yes! Our registration system accepts bookings from any country. We would love to welcome some international supporters!

Why is it called the Star Challenge?

At Signpost we believe that everyone has their own unique gifts and potential, and that each and every one of us can be a star in their own way!
